Restrained waves ripple from the grille into the hood, while the rear character line gradually builds into a muscular fender. Low at the hood and pert at the decklid, the short-wheelbase Q50 wears its lines well. By definition, the sedan buyer desires a more involved driving experience wrapped in styling that makes a statement. These days sedans are a sporty and stylish alternative to workaday CUVs. This handsome wrapper still looks sleek today, particularly in vivid or dark colors. The Q50’s basic design dates back to 2013, but the styling has aged very well. The strongly-established identities of its older models were binned in favor of naming every model “Q something.” The current Q50 debuted in 2013 and while it’s had some major tech upgrades since, it’s still a bit too quiet and sedate compared to other compact luxury sedans, which are usually defined by their tech offerings and sporty feel. In the 2010s, Infiniti’s focus shifted to softer luxury and Buick-like quiet comfort. Almost two decades later the G35’s Q50 descendant still has some of the look, but not nearly as much of the edge. Edgy style and vivid performance quickly came to define the brand, positioning Infiniti as the youthful tech-forward alternative to luxury stalwarts. A generation ago, the Infiniti G35 shook up the sports sedan segment by blending Infiniti’s subtle luxury ethos with a Tokyo tuner car vibe.
